A former French fishing barquentine with a shortened rig to better resist storms.
With a break during the Second World War she fished until about 1950. Her first name was Commandant Louis Richard; after her sale in 1948 she was renamed Jean Marc Aline and, because the fishery proved unprofitable, was to be sold again after her first voyage.
In 1951 the Italian navy bought her and converted her into a sail training ship; since 1955 she has served the naval school at La Maddalena under the name Palinuro. She was given a major overhaul at Messina between 1984 and 1986.
She sails the Mediterranean off the Italian coast and attends sailing events — in 2000 she sailed the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in the Baltic and was a guest of Sail Bremerhaven.
