Built in 1904 for the Hamburg shipping company Siemers & Co.; her first name, Kurt, honoured the company's director Dr Kurt Siemers, and she carried nitrate from South America around Cape Horn to Europe.
Confiscated in the USA in 1917, she was renamed Dreadnought and sailed under several owners in the Pacific and towards the west coast of Australia, taking the name Moshulu in September 1917.
In 1922 the Charles Nelson Co. of San Francisco bought her and used her to carry timber to Australia and Africa until 1927/28. She then lay unemployed for seven years at Seattle and later Winslow, Washington.
In 1935 the Finnish shipowner Gustaf Erikson bought her; she sailed by way of Australia to Europe and carried Australian grain under the Finnish flag until 1940.
In 1942 German troops confiscated her, removed her rigging and used her as a depot ship at Horten in the Oslo Fjord. In September 1947 she stranded and turned over; she was lifted and sold to Narvik, where plans to convert her into a motor ship had to be given up for lack of money.
In 1948 Swedish owners bought her and used her for four years as a grain depot under the name Oplag. In 1952 the German shipowner H. Schliewen bought her, wanting to rig her again and use her as a sail training ship alongside Pamir and Passat, but the costs forced him to give up. In 1961 the Finnish government bought her and used her as a grain depot at Naantali.
In 1968 she was converted into a restaurant ship and re-rigged as a four-masted barque; in 1972 she was towed to New York and since 1974 has been in Philadelphia, where a maritime museum aboard could be visited by tourists.
A fire damaged her in 1989 and she was repaired at Camden, New Jersey. She has had new owners since 1994 and has been used as a restaurant in Philadelphia since 1996.
