Her keel was laid in 1952 at the H. C. Stülcken & Sohn yard in Hamburg to the order of the Indonesian Navy. She makes training voyages mainly in East Asian waters, and was given a general overhaul in 2002.
She attends sailing events all over the world — Osaka, Boston, Amsterdam, Rouen, Bremerhaven, Rostock — and has raced in European tall ship races, among them in 2005 and 2010.
In 2013 she was to join the Royal Australian Navy's International Fleet Review in early October, but in August a storm off the coast of Western Australia badly damaged her rig; repairs were carried out at Fremantle.
The name Dewaruci comes from Indonesian legend, where it belongs to a god of the sea standing for courage and bravery; her figurehead depicts him. KRI is short for Kapal perang Republik Indonesia — warship of the Republic of Indonesia.
