Built between 1884 and 1887 at the Camper & Nicholson yard in Gosport, southern England, for Lieutenant MacGregor of Somerset, originally rigged as a schooner.

Over her life she changed names, flags and rigs more often than most ships do together, passing through Britain, Sweden, France and Germany. She has been a racing yacht, a barquentine and a three-masted schooner. Between 1893 and the early 1920s she raced under names including Dolores, Joyfarer and Hinemoa; an engine was fitted in 1915.

In 1942 she passed to the British Admiralty and until 1944 served at Plymouth as a barrage balloon carrier against air attack, her rig removed. After the war she lay near a yard at Salcombe and served as a houseboat from 1950 to 1955. She was restored at Camper & Nicholson in Gosport between 1947 and 1950, but left unrigged.

In 1955 the Intermar Trading Company converted her into a three-masted gaff schooner. In 1964 her Swedish owner John Lennart Ostermann made her a barquentine and renamed her Amphitrite af Stockholm. In 1969 the Berlin film company Horst Film bought her, had her overhauled for camera work and used her as a film ship in 1971–72.

Since 1974 she has mainly carried young people on adventure voyages through the North and Baltic Seas and the Caribbean. Responsibility for her rests with the Clipper — Deutsches Jugendwerk zur See association, and she has been rigged again as a three-masted gaff schooner. She sails the Baltic from April to October.

In Greek mythology Amphitrite was the wife of Poseidon, queen of the sea, drawn on a shell chariot by Tritons.
