Originally a steam-driven vessel with an auxiliary ketch rig used not for propulsion but to steady her while drifting with the nets. She later fished as a lugger and then became a coastal motor vessel. The name Alvei means "anybody who goes all the ways".

After she was decommissioned in 1986 her new owner, Evan Logan, spent eight years restoring her in Portugal and re-rigged her as a topsail schooner. She then sailed to Madeira, the Canaries, Barbados, Bequia, Grenada, Trinidad, the Dutch Antilles, Panama, Costa Rica, the Galápagos, the Marquesas, Tuamotu, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Tutuila, Samoa, Savai'i, Vava'u, Fiji, Vanuatu, Australia and New Zealand. Since 1995 she has spent most of her time in the Pacific.

Her purpose today is not profit: she lets a changing crew live cheaply and self-sufficiently while learning the traditional arts of the sailor. Everyone who sails aboard is crew, sharing responsibility for maintenance and navigation, watch keeping, sail handling and repairs.
