originally put into service as a training ship for the German Navy under the name "Horst Wessel" in Hamburg in 1936.

the "Sagres II" ex-"Albert Leo Schlageter" (1937) and the "Gorch Fock II" (1958) were built after the same lines, nearly identical but smaller are the "Mircea" (1938) and "Tovarishch" ex-"Gorch Fock" (1933).

converted to a cargo ship for transporting men and supplies throughout the Baltic Sea during the war, given to the US Coast Guard after the war 1946 as reparation and was taken to New London; used for military maritime training by the legendary Coast Guard (founded in 1790), renamed the "Eagle".

every year she undertakes a main voyage through European or Middle-American waters, and also sails short cruises in the western Atlantic.

took part in the parade of sail at the USA bicentennial celebrations in 1976 as well as the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America.

1981-82 modernized and fitted with additional watertight bulkheads.

1996 she visited the German shipyard "Blohm & Voss" in Hamburg where she was launched 60 years ago.

took part in the 1996 Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race from Rostock to St. Petersburg; flag-ship for the 2000 New York Sail.
