Alma Doepel

built 1903 by Frederik Doepel on the Bellinger River in Australia, launched Oct. 10, 1903; registered in Sydney.

voyages with timber from Port Macquarie and the Bellinger River to New Zealand.

1916 sold to Henry Jones & Co, jam makers in Hobart, AUS; registered in Hobart, transport of jam and later timber to the mainland, especially to Melbourne.

1942 requisitioned by the Army, removal of 2 of the 3 masts, fitted with stronger engine, transport of goods and troops under the number AK82.

1946 begin of her re-conversion into a sailing ship for transporting timber, based at the Tasmanian east coast port of St. Helens.

1959-61 removal of the masts again, transport of limestone until 1975.

1976 taken over by Michael Wood and David Boykett, governors of Sail and Adventure Ltd., restore of the ship.

1987 participation in the Sydney Tallship Festival.

used for sail training purposes since then until 1998, idle in Victoria Dock because lack of money.

taken to Port Macquarie in April 2001, open to the public daily for guided tours at the Lady Nelson Wharf in Port Macquarie, 2004 restoration grant by the Australian government.

intended to be used for tourism cruises around Port or even costal hopping to Coffs Harbour in August 2004.

named Alma Doepel for the shipbuilder's daughter.
