A replica of the original Jeanie Johnston (1847–58), a nineteenth-century Irish emigrant ship built in Quebec and owned by the Donovan family of Tralee, which carried Irish emigrants fleeing the potato famine to the United States during the Great Famine.

She was built at Tralee in County Kerry with the support of the Irish government, local authorities and many friends of the Jeanie Johnston in Ireland, the United States and Canada.

She is a seagoing vessel as well as a living history exhibition, and is intended to offer sail training as well.

In May 2000 she was launched by the project's patron, the President of Ireland Mary McAleese; after some delay she was completed in the spring of 2002.

In February 2003 she left County Kerry for the United States and Canada; during her North America tour she visited ports on the American and Canadian Atlantic coasts and returned to Ireland in October 2003.
