A training ship built for the Ecuadorian Navy on the same lines as Gloria (1967), her older and slightly smaller sister. Her keel was laid in June 1976, she was launched in October and handed over to the navy in July 1977. She is named after Ecuador's main river.

In 1977–78 she sailed mainly the eastern Pacific and the Caribbean and circumnavigated South America, calling at ten foreign ports. In 1980 she sailed to Europe and took part in the Tall Ships Race from Cartagena in Colombia to Norfolk, taking second place; she came third in the Boston to Kristiansand race and joined the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race from Kiel to Amsterdam by way of Karlskrona and Frederikshavn.

In 1981 she sailed to Hawaii and Acapulco, in 1982 to the Marquesas and Punta Arenas in southernmost Chile, in 1983 around South America again, in 1984 to Hawaii, California and the Mexican west coast and in 1985 to Easter Island and Juan Fernández in Chile. She took part in Operation Sail in New York in 1986.

In 1987–88 she sailed by way of Tahiti and Fiji to Australia for the bicentenary celebrations, returning via New Zealand, Peru and Chile. After two longer Caribbean voyages she sailed to Lisbon in 1992 for the Columbus Regatta to Cádiz, Tenerife and Puerto Rico.

After three further voyages to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico she called at Atlantic ports in the United States in 1998 and sailed to San Francisco in 1999, calling at Acapulco, San Diego and Monterrey. In 2000 she took part in OpSail from San Juan to Miami, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York and New London.
