Commissioned in 1968 as a Colombian training ship for naval cadets and a floating overseas ambassador for her country.
She has attended many maritime events, races and festivals. She circumnavigated the globe in 1970 and sailed mostly in the Caribbean from 1971 to 1975; then came the Tall Ships Race at Amsterdam in 1980, Philadelphia in 1982, Osaka in 1983, the race from Puerto Rico to Bermuda and Halifax in 1984 and the New York Operation Sail in 1986. She joined Australia's bicentenary celebrations and the Hobart to Sydney regatta in 1988, the bicentenary of the French Revolution at Rouen, Sail Hamburg in 1989, Sail Amsterdam in 1990, the Columbus Regatta in 1992, Sail Bremerhaven in 2005 and 2015 and the Hanse Sail in Rostock in 2019.
She is named Gloria after the national anthem, Oh gloria inmarcesible — "oh unfading glory".
