Built at the Spanish yard Astilleros y Talleres Celaya in Bilbao — keel laid in July 1981, launched on 9 January 1982 and handed over to the Mexican Navy in July 1982.
She often attends sailing ship gatherings: Sail Amsterdam 1985, Sail Rouen in 1989, 1994 and 1999, the Baltic in 1996 and 2000, Sail Osaka 1997, Lisbon 1998 and events in Australia in 1999.
She circumnavigated the world in 1990, sailed the Transatlantic Columbus Regatta in 1992 and rounded Cape Horn in 1993. She takes part regularly in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Races, and her crew were awarded the Cutty Sark Trophy for contributing most to international friendship and understanding in 1998 and 2000.
She is named after the last Aztec emperor, hanged after his capture by the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés.
