Built in 1992 specifically for Class Afloat, a college for students of natural science and politics who are at the same time the crew of a ship that sails around the world each year.
She was classed, met high safety standards and was run by a professional crew. Since 1985 more than five hundred students had taken part, covering over 350,000 nautical miles to hundreds of ports worldwide — the first experience having been gained aboard Pogoria before Concordia was built.
On 17 February 2010 she capsized and sank in rough seas and high winds 550 kilometres southeast of Rio de Janeiro. All sixty-four people aboard — 48 students, 8 teachers and 8 crew — were rescued.
