Built in 1930 at the state Spanish shipyard in Cádiz as a hydrographic research ship.

Since 1971 she has served as a training ship of the Uruguayan Navy. Her training voyages take her to ports all over the world and especially in South America — among them the Grand Columbus Regatta of 1992.

She has sailed regularly to European ports since 1989, taking part in Sail Hamburg in 1989 and Sail Bremerhaven in 1990, and appearing as guest of honour at the Hanse Sail in Rostock in 1991. Ashore, her spirited and musical crew cause a sensation among visitors — they were awarded ISTA's Communication Trophy as the most popular crew at the final gathering of the 1996 Baltic Sail in Copenhagen.

Captain Francisco P. Miranda (1869–1925) was a well-known naval officer distinguished above all for his research in Uruguayan waters.
