A faithful replica of the legendary fishing schooner and racer Bluenose. Ships of this type competed — much as yachts do for the America's Cup — for the International Fisherman's Trophy, on condition that the crews had genuinely worked in the commercial fishery. The regatta ran until 1938, and Bluenose remained undefeated from 1921 to the end.
Bluenose II was built in 1963 at Lunenburg for the Halifax brewery Oland & Son. After eight years in charter work she was sold in 1971 to the government of Nova Scotia and has since served as a tourist attraction and on goodwill visits abroad, operated by the Bluenose II Preservation Trust.
She has attended many windjammer gatherings, among them the Canadian Windjammer Rally of 1974, Operation Sail in New York in 1976 and 1986, and Québec in 1984. In 1992 she sailed to Toronto for the 125th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation and the 350th of the founding of Montréal, and was present at the start of the Halifax–Amsterdam leg of Tall Ships 2000.
