Built in 1926 at Nylands Mekaniske Verksted in Oslo and registered as Pol II — a sister ship of Pol IV, today's Stedemaeght. She hunted whales in Arctic and Antarctic waters and the Bering Sea until the 1940s, driven by a steam engine and carrying two auxiliary masts, with Oslo as her home port.
Sold to Sweden, she was converted into a freighter at the Sölvesborg yard in 1948 and named Lister. In 1951 she was lengthened by two metres at Wilhelmshaven to 40.93 m; in 1962 her wooden wheelhouse was replaced by a steel structure and she was given double bottoms and side walls so she could carry scrap metal.
In 1967 Rederij Grube of Marstal bought her and ran her in tramp trade between Asia, South America and Scandinavia until 1998, when the Bruinsma brothers acquired her and converted her into a barque for luxury passenger voyages. She was opened to the public at the Hamburg port festival in April 2001 and is certified for worldwide voyages.
She offers central heating, air conditioning, a deckhouse, electric winches and fine catering — sailing somewhere between nostalgia and luxury.
