Built at Groningen in 1928 as a schooner aak named Magda and commanded by Captain Johann von Rönn of Krautsand. A 100 hp Deutz engine was fitted in 1936; in 1950 her hull was lengthened by some seven metres and the rig removed, leaving only a crane for loading.

She continued to change hands and names: Horn under Captain Walter Brey in 1959, Amalie Stüven under Captain Hans-August Stüven in 1965 — named for his wife — and Eiland under Captain Willy Martens of Norderney in 1973.

The Dutchman Willem Sligting then bought her and by 1983 had converted her into a flat-bottomed three-masted schooner named Albert Johannes, sailing with guests on charter. A 240 hp Detroit engine followed in 1991; J. J. Dam of Spakenburg bought her in 1992 and Steffen Schwarze of Rostock in 2000. She remains registered under the Dutch flag and usually sails from Rostock in summer.

She takes part in Baltic sailing events such as Kiel Week and Hanse Sail Rostock. All three masts were refitted in 2011.
