Built in 1913 to gather Arctic specimens, she rounded Cape Horn on her first voyage in an unsuccessful hunt for a bowhead whale.
In 1914 the San Francisco Bar Pilots' Association bought her, took down her rig and converted her into a work boat; during the Second World War the Coast Guard used her to guard the bay. After thirty-eight years of work she was decommissioned and sold in 1952, then lay on the beach near Sausalito for years.
Brought to Seattle in 1960, she passed through many hands until Youth Adventures, Inc. was founded and put her to work as a sail training vessel. In 1974 she was restored to nearly all her original lines.
Since 1988 she has served as a floating classroom for the environmental education programme Sound Experience, running public day sails and week-long trips from March through October while the work of historic preservation continues.
